What's the difference between turtoise, turtle and terrapin?

Turtle BrE /tɜtl/ AmE / tɜrtl /
1. (AmE also sea turtle) a large reptile with a hard round shell, that lives in the sea.
2. (AmE, informal) any reptile with a large shell, for example a tortoise or terrapin.


Tortoise BrE /tɔtəs/  AmE /tɔrtəs/
a reptile with a hard round shell, that lives on land and moves very slowly. It can pull its head and legs into its shell.

Terrapin  BrE /terəpɪn/ AmE /terəpɪn/
a small turtle (= a reptile with a hard round shell), that lives in warm rivers and lakes in North America.
